I just realized last Thursday how amazing snow is. I was having a really bad day and was generally apathetic toward most things. Then it started snowing and it was amazing. I felt outstanding once the snow started falling. It was like it was an eraser for my bad feelings. All of a sudden I started to realize a few things about it. When I look at snow, I see limitless possibilities. Speaking from an emotional standpoint, snow is beautiful. It drifts lazily down from the heavens to grace the eyes of mortals. However when I look from a scientific standpoint, I see that snow is one of the most complex structures in the universe. Every snowflake is different. They all have unique crystallized structures. So thinking with both of these qualities in mind, I feel happy because the situation shows me that if nature can make something so complex, beautiful, and plentiful by mere accident, then we all have to be able to accomplish something with effort. We have to be able to make something that makes a difference. This something will be ethereal and permanent, not fleeting and worthless. I can just stand in the snow and imagine all of the opportunities that will be taken. All of the ways the world around us can change become evident. This little random thing, this “snow” shows me hope for the world and gives my heart peace. Then again, who knows? It could be that everything in life is made up of a series of random coincidences which have accidently brought about all events and matter. Maybe everything I’m saying is gibberish, but it’s the thought that counts, right?
Your reflection on snow is poignant and relevant to the learnings of this course. If we lived in an area that experienced snow regularly, would you have the same appreciation of this gift of nature? Because snow is not a common occurrence in Memphis, we appreciate the change with which it appears to cloak our world. We slow down, and we appreciate the beauty that can come with change.

I'm actually not from Memphis. I'm from Cincinnati, OH. I think that the reason I feel that snow is important is because I once had it and now I rarely get to experience it anymore.
ReplyDeleteI am from Chicago. It snows there on a regular basis in a winter. If Christmas isn't 'white', then it just makes everything seem very off-balance. I agree that snow is very beautiful. I was very excited to go home over Xmas break, because I knew it would be snowing. I do not think that people who live in an environment where it snows a lot appreciate it like people who don't get to experience it as often do.That being said, I think you made a great point about the snow bringing about an emotional and positive change.
ReplyDeleteI think it's the fact that the snowflakes falling down ever so slowly makes us (the people) feel like we're at ease and stress-free. Whereas in rain, you can hear the sounds of thunder and lightning.
ReplyDeleteIt's weird because i'm the same way. I'm from Indiana so 3 foot of snow was just a normal winter but now when it snows its just calming. It almost makes me feel young again! Its crazy because i sat here and watched all the snow fall even though i knew i had to drive in it that night and i would have to wakeup at 5 am and go to work with the roads covered in ice. For some odd reason all of this didn't make me stressed out at all. Just something about the snow gets to me like that. It's awesome!:)
