I was having a conversation earlier with some friends and we were discussing how we have done some stupid, yet fun activities over the years. In the end, the conversation eventually became all of us talking about our previous injuries and how we got them. Then I realized that most parents don’t even allow their kids to come anywhere near a risk anymore. I’m starting to think that parents in America are becoming more overprotective of their children. I don’t understand why people would take all the fun out of life. I mean, life would be pretty bland without danger. Kids learn from their mistakes, so shouldn’t people let them make them first? I’m not telling parents to throw their kids into harms way, but seriously, how many times have you heard of a kid dying from an accident in a “non child proof everything” house? I have a collection of past mistakes which I’ve learned from, so as not to repeat the past, and I wouldn’t trade any of those experiences for anything. Parents should let their children live a little. If they don’t, then they are taking away the real lives of their children.
I agree, I have done a lot of stupid things in my life too. I think being over protective and being concerned about everything sometimes leads you to get hurt more often. I agree that most parents today are overprotective with their children and this makes them not as socially adapted to society.
ReplyDeleteThe Millenial generation is very protected not only by their parents but also by social systems (including those of the government) that are designed to prevent failure. We cling to the safety of our Facebook worlds and shun the risks of the real world. How do we go about creating classrooms where failure and risk taking is rewarded?

I also agree because if the parent is too overprotective of his/her child it's like their controlling every move they make. How can a child learn from something if they don't make a mistake? It's part of growing up and knowing what to do and what not to do. Everyone makes mistakes; no one's perfect because I know I'm not.
ReplyDeleteYup. Parents won't even let their kids climb trees anymore. I remember those times where I think back and ask "Why did I do that?" But, I don't regret doing those things. It made my childhood. Good post. Reading this brought back a lot of memories.
ReplyDeleteMy friends and I also talk and laugh about all the stupid-fun times we've had together. It's always good to let go and have a little fun....everyone needs to explore their wild side just a little!
